A new study from sociologist Regina Werum, in collaboration with Christina Steidl at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, suggests the U.S. military provides an important path to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, especially for women.
"[Women with military experience] are more likely to go on to college and earn a degree in a STEM field, and the odds are higher that they'll work in a STEM occupation," Werum said.
The research is featured in the National Science Foundation's annual STEM for All Video Showcase. Built around the theme "Innovations in STEM Education," this year's event will feature over 240 innovative projects funded by the NSF and other federal agencies.
NSF encourages the public to engage in this work. They have included a "Public Choice Award" for presentations that receive the most votes during the showcase event.
