by Dr. Kort-Butler Mon, 11/03/2014 - 15:59
UNL is hosting this annual symposium on November 6 and 7 at the Nebraska Union.  NUSS brings together sociology students and faculty from Nebraska colleges and universities.  During the Two-day conference, students present papers and engage in roundtable discussions about their research or theoretical work.  Awards are given to outstanding papers. Students also participate in panel presentations about their internship experiences.  Participants have the opportunity to hear about the ins-and-outs of graduate school from current graduate students.

The topics for this year’s presentations include student research about the college experience; gender and sexuality; race, ethnicity, and identity; and issues surrounding mental and physical health.  During a special session Thursday afternoon, attendees will participate in an interactive session to learn more about the Inside Out program, a partnership between Peru State College and Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.  The session will be facilitated by faculty and students from Peru State and an Inside Out graduate.

Dr. Kirk Dombrowski, UNL Department of Sociology, will give the keynote address.    Dr. Dombrowski’s research is wide-reaching, ranging from remote communities in Alaska to rural areas in Puerto Rico.  Among his many projects, he studies social networks in order to improve our understanding of social inequalities, particularly as they relate to health issues, often focusing on socially marginalized groups.  His lecture is entitled, “Finding and Understanding Social Boundaries within an Arctic Community.”  The lecture, on Thursday evening at 7:30 in the Nebraska Union Centennial Room,is open to the UNL Community.
