About me

I am Shadrach Sackey, a master’s student in the sociology program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I dive deep into the fascinating world of crime and deviance, recidivism, and social inequality. My passion lies in exploring how community-based sentencing programs can challenge traditional incarceration and offer a more effective approach to reducing recidivism. This current focus builds on my undergraduate research, which explored society’s perceptions of recidivism in Ayigya Zongo. Through my academic journey, I aim to contribute to evidence-based policy solutions that address systemic inequalities and promote justice reform.

I earned a bachelor’s degree in social work and a minor in sociology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, but it was through sociology that I discovered a whole new way of seeing the world. What began as a simple curiosity turned into a passion for understanding how we can tackle real-world issues like inequality, crime, etc. That spark has grown into a driving force behind why I continue to study sociology today, pushing me to find meaningful solutions to some of society’s toughest challenges.

Outside of my studies, I find peace and inspiration in nature. Whether I am hiking through quiet trails or capturing moments with my camera, being outdoors helps me recharge. Photography lets me see the world in unique ways, always searching for details others might miss. These experiences not only bring balance to my life but also remind me of the beauty and complexity of the world around us.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s sociology department feels like a home away from home, offering an enriching environment where I can grow both personally and professionally. I am glad to be part of such a dynamic community and I look forward to making the most of my time, embracing the experiences and connections that will shape my future.
