Careers in Sociology
While persons with degrees in sociology go into many different fields of employment, sociological training is particularly relevant in jobs needing persons with skills in interpersonal relations, problem-solving, and data analysis. For example, course in social psychology and organizational sociology provide knowledge of human motivation and attitudes, skills valuable for occupations involving marketing, advertising, sales and counseling. Training in crime and delinquency is sought by agencies dealing with criminal justice, probation and corrections. Research methods courses prepare students for occupations typically found in research organizations and government agencies involving data collection and analysis, program evaluations and report writing. Courses focusing on gender roles and on race and ethnic relations are valuable for those in affirmative action fields and personnel departments of businesses or government agencies with a multiracial workforce. Sociology also provides useful pre-professional training for a number of advance-degree programs in addition to the M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology, especially law, social work, counseling and business.
