Graduate Awards
Cheryl Applegate Teaching Award
An annual award established to recognize graduate students who display exceptional quality in teaching and working with undergraduate students. The intent is to encourage students to perform top quality work in teaching, instructional development and working with undergraduates. The award is named in honor of Cheryl Applegate, an ABD graduate student who died of cancer before completing her Ph.D. work. Cheryl described herself as a Black woman activist, a teacher and social change maker.
Graduate instructors who have taught their own course(s) (specifically excluding recitation sections) at UNL are eligible. Students nominate themselves by providing a statement of their teaching philosophy and a teaching portfolio of their classroom teaching experience at UNL. The student(s) selected for the honor will receive a certificate and a cash award.

Department of Sociology Research Award
An annual award established to recognize exceptional quality in research papers written in graduate courses. The intent is to encourage students to perform top quality work on course papers, and for the department to recognize those papers that have exceptional potential to lead to publication.
The journal-length papers (no more than 30 pages in total length) may be written in courses, in independent study, or papers drawn from thesis or dissertation research. They must be sole authored. Research is interpreted broadly to also include original scholarly work in the area of theory, as well as research that embraces both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
Students nominate themselves by providing a clean copy of their paper to the Graduate Chair. Paper must have been completed within the last 15 months and not submitted for previous consideration. The author of the winning paper will receive a certificate as well as a cash award.

Department of Sociology Teaching Award
Evidence of superior teaching as a TA and/or instructor. (Teaching evaluations must be submitted).

Request for a travel grant to present research findings, attend a teaching or research workshop, or to gather data for a research project. (Must include supporting documents).

Alice Frost Howard Graduate Student Research Award
Alice Frost Howard was the first woman graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Class of 1876. The Alice Frost Howard Award is an annual award to an outstanding female graduate student in Sociology.

Joyce O. Hertzler Fund for Sociological Research
Joyce O. Hertzler was on the faculty of the Sociology Department from 1923 to 1961. This award provides graduate students and assistant professors in Sociology support for scholarship activities.

Nicholas Babchuk Endowment for Excellence in Research by Sociology Graduate Students
Dr. Babchuk was a member of the Sociology Department from 1959 to 1987. This award is used to support graduate student research in sociology, a priority to Nick throughout his distinguished career. Annual awards are made to support the research activities of an outstanding graduate student in Sociology.

James M. Reinhardt Graduate Student Research Award
This award is designed specifically to support graduate student research in the areas of criminology or delinquency. The application should provide a proposal for how the award will be used to for research in the specified areas.
