"Doing Sociology" student presentations are April 22

For the first time, students in Sociology 310A, "Applied Sociology: Community-Based Research," and Sociology 310B, “Doing Sociology: Community-Based Research II,” are providing poster presentations about their academic year long research study.

The presentations will be Friday, April 22, 12:30-1:20 in Bailey Library.

The students worked with school officials, teachers, and students at two middle schools to do their research. They surveyed over 400 students at both schools, participated in after school programs, and interviewed key actors.

Research topics include:

  • “Acculturative Stress, School Belonging, and Academic Resilience Among Middle-School Aged ELL (English Language Learner) Students”
  • “What is the Relationship Between Skipping Breakfast, Poverty, and BMI, in Middle School?”
  • “The effects of Cell Phone use on the Quantity and Quality of Early Adolescent Friendships?”
  • “Listening to Student Voices: How Cyber bulling Effects Grades and School Belonging in Adolescence”
  • “Academic Achievement at Risk: How Student Mobility and School Connectedness influence Academic Achievement”
  • “The Impact of Academic Pressure on Perfectionism and Self-Esteem Among Middle School youth”
  • “Body Perception’s effect on Academic Achievement by Gender”
