My name is Megumi Watanabe. I’m from Hiroshima, Japan. I earned my BA in sociology with minors in Women’s and Gender Studies and Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2007. My research interests are in family (gender, work, and family), health, and research methods. My undergraduate thesis was a qualitative study “The Influence of Marriage and Cohabitation on Academic Progress.” Family is my primary research interest, and I am particularly interested in studying how families manage time to balance work and child-raising. For my thesis, I will focus on motherhood, women, and work in contemporary society. I will look at working mothers’ gender attributes, the time they spend on housework, and their self-evaluation of the maternal role. My secondary area of research interest is on the effects of socioeconomic status on health outcomes. I am specifically interested in the effects of geographic location, income, and occupational status on diet and its effects on health conditions.
