I received my BA in Sociology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2005, and began work on my M.A. in 2007. My primary areas of interest are criminology with a focus on penology, theory, and class inequality. The focal point of my interest lies in correctional education programs, and my M.A. thesis is looking at the effects of post-secondary education on inmates within the prison setting. I also have a strong interest in criminological theory especially critical theory and theories dealing with labeling. Over the past three semesters, I have taught introductory sociology recitations, worked as a research assistant, and instructed the sociology department’s correspondence courses. I am currently teaching three introductory sociology recitation classes, and the department’s correspondence courses which include: Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Sociology of Crime, and Marriage and the Family. I will also teach an Introduction to Sociology course during the Second 5-week Summer 2009 Session. I am active in the Nebraska Association of Sociology Graduate Students, serving as the FAC (activities) coordinator, and the Big Event (UNL volunteer event) coordinator which takes place in April. In addition to this commitment, I serve as the Sociology Department’s representative to the UNL Graduate Student Association. When not in the sociology department, I enjoy biking, yoga, taking part in community activism, going to concerts, reading, and spending time with my son.
