Sociology Graduate Students

Lisa Melander

My name is Lisa Melander and I earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and politics from Cornell College. I also received a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  I am currently ABD, and I plan on graduating from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May 2010.

My research interests broadly include Family and Crime/Deviance, and many of my projects emerge from the intersection of these areas. I am particularly interested in a variety of youth and young adult issues including personal victimization, delinquency, substance use, and mental health concerns. As a research assistant for Dr. Kimberly Tyler, I have also conducted research on a variety of homeless young adult issues including self-mutilation behaviors, partner violence, and HIV-risk behaviors. I have also taught Marriage and Family in the past.

I am currently working on my dissertation entitled “Explaining College Partner Violence in the Digital Age: An Instrumental Design Mixed Methods Study.” This study utilizes both focus group and quantitative survey data to explore how technology may be used among college students to perpetrate dating violence. Partner violence researchers often estimate prevalence rates by using standardized survey instruments; however, current measures of dating violence do not generally incorporate technological forms of psychological aggression. As such, I conducted five focus group interviews and created a quantitative survey instrument based on these qualitative themes. The survey was administered to a sample of students enrolled in undergraduate courses, and I am currently analyzing the data to examine correlates of cyber aggression perpetration and victimization.

During my free time, I enjoy running, reading for fun, and spending time with family and friends.
