Sociology Graduate Students

Alian Kasabian

I received my B.A. in psychology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 2008. In general, my interests are in gender and quantitative methods, although I have interests in education, labor markets, social psychology, sexuality and sexual orientation. I have done research on attire and credibility, HIV status and empathy, stereotype violating gays and lesbians, and discrimination against race stereotype violators. As an undergraduate, I was a research assistant in the Social Perceptions and Intergroup Relations (SPIR) lab under Dr. Bettina Casad, running experiments and entering, cleaning and analyzing data. I continue to work with Dr. Casad, and we have one journal article under revision, and an encyclopedia entry in press.

For my Master’s thesis, I will be investigating reentry students’ experiences in higher education. A couple of questions I would like to answer are: Do reentry students feel supported in higher education, as compared to traditional students? and Are there gender differences within reentry students? I plan to graduate with an M.A. in May of 2010, and continue on to the Ph.D.

Currently, I am a Graduate Teaching Assistant for a mass Introduction to Sociology course, and teach three Recitation sections.
