Sociology Graduate Students

Lyndie Christensen

My name is Lyndie Christensen and I earned bachelor’s degrees in Women’s Studies and Spanish from Nebraska Wesleyan University.  I will complete my MA in Sociology with a graduate specialization in Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) in August 2009 and intend to earn my doctorate in Sociology with a doctoral specialization in WGS by the spring of 2012.

Generally, my research orientation resides in feminist sociology, explicitly located in the areas of family, religion, and fertility / sexuality.  In my thesis, I am investigating the help-seeking behaviors – spiritual consultation, medical assistance, both, or neither – of women experiencing fertility challenges, utilizing the first wave of the National Survey of Fertility Barriers (NSFB).  Eventually, I plan to expand this research project by incorporating an analysis of the health outcomes (emotional, religious) of subfecund women with the second wave of the NSFB.

My teaching orientation also resides in feminist sociology, and I have been the instructor of the online courses Marriage and Family (225x) and Women in Contemporary Society (200b).  In the summer of 2009, I will co-instruct Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies and also Women in Contemporary Society.  I have previously taught sections of recitation and also led the honors section for Introduction to Sociology.

I have served as the graduate coordinator for the Undergraduate Sociological Association.  I am also a member of the Women’s Leadership Coalition at UNL.  Additionally, I am a member of the Academic Advisory Board for Annual Editions: Gender for the McGraw-Hill Contemporary Learning Series.  I am a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, Midwest Sociologists for Women in Society, Sociologists for Women in Society, Midwest Sociological Society, and the National Women’s Studies Association.

During my free time, I enjoy going to concerts and dancing, riding my bicycle, traveling, attempting to be an epicurean, reading and writing (posting, blogging) about feminism, and spending time with my friends, family, and animal companions.
